Vegan Chocolate Orange Pancakes

There is no such thing as too many pancake variations. I love experimenting with different flavour combinations in the morning and these chocolate orange pancakes are a delicious way to start the day. Here is my easy recipe for easy vegan chocolate orange pancakes.

To make these pancakes chocolatey I like to add both cocoa powder and vegan chocolate protein powder for a little protein boost. However if you don't have or want to use protein powder feel free to substitute for more self-raising flour, although they may not be as chocolatey!

For the delicious orange flavours in these chocolate orange pancakes I like to use both orange extract and fresh orange zest. Using both really adds so much flavour to the pancakes, and the left over zest and orange slices can be used to top your pancake stack.

Vegan Chocolate Orange Pancakes

Prep time: 2 minutes

Cooking time: 8 minutes

Total time: 10 minutes

Servings: 6-8 pancakes

Ingredients

  • 65g self-raising flour

  • 1/2 tbsp cocoa powder

  • 30g vegan chocolate protein powder (or substitute for more flour)

  • 1 tbsp sugar or sweetener powder

  • 1 tsp baking powder

  • 1/2 tsp orange extract

  • 1/2 tsp orange zest (optional)

  • Pinch of salt

  • Plant-based milk - Approx 180ml + extra as required

Instructions

  1. Heat a frying pan over a medium heat with a little oil.

  2. Place all the ingredients in bowl, except the milk, and mix well to combine.

  3. Slowly add a little milk at a time and mix until a thick batter is formed, be careful not to over mix, a few lumps are fine!

  4. Spoon the batter into the heated frying pan to form your pancakes, you may need to do this in batches depending on how large your pan is.

  5. After 3-4 minutes, or when small bubbles have started to appear on the surface, carefully flip each pancake over and cook for a further 2-3 minutes.

  6. Serve with your favourite toppings.

Notes

  • For alternative pancake recipes, have a look at my vegan banana oat pancakes and my vegan protein pancakes.

  • Be careful not to have your frying pan too hot or the outside of your pancakes will cook to fast and the middle will still be raw.

  • If you only have one frying pan then I recommend turning your oven on a low heat to keep the first batch of pancakes warm whilst you are still cooking!
