It is so easy to find vegan substitutes for almost anything you can imagine, including bacon! We have so much choice for vegan bacons in the supermarket, but my favourite way to add 'bacon' to my dishes is to make my own tofu bacon bits. Here is my recipe the perfect vegan tofu bacon bits, which are the perfect way to elevate any meal.
To get the perfect vegan 'bacon' I use a combination of ingredients for my tofu marinade! I like to add soy sauce for saltiness, a little liquid smoke to add smokiness, and maple syrup to add sweetness. Nutritional yeast is also a key ingredient, you can use any type you can find but I would definitely recommend Notorious Nooch Co Smoky Bacon Nooch for this recipe, which I was kindly gifted and I am now hooked on!
These tofu bacon bits are so versitile and great to add to so many different dishes. Examples of ways to use this vegan bacon is in my vegan loaded potato skins, vegan carbonara, or to top a delicious salad!
Tofu Bacon Bits
Prep time: 5 minutes
Cooking time: 35 minutes
Total time: 40 minutes
200g firm tofu
4 tbsp soy sauce
2 tbsp water
1 tsp maple syrup
2 tbsp nutritional yeast
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp liquid smoke
Salt, to taste
Preheat the oven to 200 °C (or 180 °C fan assisted, like mine) and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
Slice the tofu into small cubes, the size is up to you!
Mix the remaining ingredients together in a bowl to make your 'bacon' marinade and add the tofu, make sure all the tofu is well covered to soak up all the flavours.
Transfer the tofu to your baking tray and spread out so there is space between all the pieces.
Bake for 35 minutes until crisp and golden, mixing every 10 minutes so all sides are cooked evenly.
Any left-overs can be stored in the refrigerator for 3-5 days.
To reheat any leftover bacon bits (not in a pre-prepared dish), I usually add to a frying pan and heat gently.
